Why Visit
Areekkal Waterfalls sits in Piramadam village, off the Kolenchery–Muvattupuzha stretch about 7-8 km from the main Kochi–Munnar road. The water drops over 70 feet across three rock levels, fed from the Mannathur Hills, with rubber plantations and woodland closing in around the site. It is not a trekking-heavy spot — you don't need to cut through forest or remote terrain to reach it, which keeps it relatively uncrowded compared to bigger falls in the district. At the base, the pool is barricaded and shallow, so families let children wade and bathe here without much worry. There are separate changing rooms for men and women along with restrooms, which is not something every waterfall in the area offers. The one catch is the descent: a long flight of steps leads down to the water, and this can be tough going for elderly visitors or anyone with knee or mobility issues, especially on the way back up. Beyond the main pool, there's room to trek a bit further and poke around the surrounding wilderness if you want more than a quick dip. Entry is priced modestly, and parking is available near the entrance as well as via the canal road route. It works well as a half-day trip from Kochi — about an hour's drive each way — rather than a full-day expedition.
