Why Visit
Kadamakkudy is not one island but fourteen, strung together by the Periyar's tributaries about 15 kilometers from Kochi. Valiya Kadamakkudy, Murikkal, Palyam Thuruth, Pizhala and Cheriya Kadamakkudy are among the names that make up this cluster, reached by road from Varappuzha town on NH-66. This is a working landscape before it is a tourist one. Pokkali paddy farming happens on a large scale here, alongside fish farming, prawn farming and toddy tapping, all visible from the roads and canal banks as you move through. Traditional Chinese fishing nets still operate, and you will see children playing by the water's edge rather than staged photo spots. The way to experience Kadamakkudy is slow: cycling trails wind between the paddy fields and backwaters, country boats can be rowed through the narrower channels, and houseboat cruises cover the wider stretches. Night fishing and crab hunting are done here as actual local practice, not performance, so timing a visit around these activities gives a more authentic sense of the place than a daytime drive-through. Birdwatchers get a quieter reward: migratory birds and local species frequent the water's edge and paddy fields, especially in the cooler months when the fields are active and the canals calmer.
