Kochareekkal Caves

Kochareekkal is two natural caves cut into a single giant rock slab near a hill in Piramadam, about 11 km from Muvattupuzha town. The first cave has a natural spring feeding into a small pond right at the entrance. The second is bigger, cool, and can hold up to 20 people inside — both are bare rock, no statues or shrines, just enormous old tree roots that have grown around the openings and now act like natural columns you have to duck under or climb past to get in. The walk in takes you through plantations and countryside before the rock face appears. Terrain is uneven and often damp near the caves, so this isn't a paved-path visit — wear shoes with grip, not sandals. There are no restrooms, shops, or signboards to speak of, just a small tea stall nearby, so carry your own water and snacks. It's a quiet spot, not on the usual Kerala waterfall circuit, which is part of the appeal if you want a short, low-key nature walk without the selfie queues. Areekal Waterfalls is 3.5 km away if you want to combine the two. Go early morning for the coolest air and to have the caves mostly to yourself.
