Why Visit
Koorumala sits on the second tallest hill in Ernakulam district, and the climb makes that clear. You park at the bottom of the hill — parking here is tight and needs care on the slope — then walk a paved pathway that runs 300 metres uphill, about 15-20 minutes with steps and railings the whole way. The road only gets you halfway; the rest is on foot regardless of what you're driving. At the top is a watchtower built for the view: Alappey, Ernakulam and Kottayam districts spread out below in a 360-degree sweep. There's a viewing deck, restrooms, and resting areas with seats if you want to sit with the view rather than just photograph it and leave. The tower is also positioned for sunsets, so if you time the climb right you get the payoff at the end of the day rather than in the middle of it. Mornings work best here — go early and you catch mist over the hills before the heat sets in. Avoid the 10am-4pm stretch; the sun gets intense with little shade on the open pathway. The narrow, rough road up to the parking area needs a driver who's comfortable with hillside roads, and public transport is unreliable, so your own vehicle is the practical choice.

Insider Knowledge
Best Time to Visit
December to March for the driest, clearest conditions
Early morning or evening
10am to 4pm, and peak monsoon (June-September)
Morning visits bring mist over the hills and cooler air for the climb, while midday heat on the open pathway makes the walk uncomfortable and monsoon rain can make the narrow access road risky.

Vehicles park at the bottom of the hill, with a 100m walk to the viewpoint; two-wheelers park sideways and cars park downhill in marked areas. The hillside parking is tight and needs careful driving.
Suited to families and fitness enthusiasts alike; the pathway has steps, railings, and shelter, though the climb still takes some effort.
A constructed pathway covers the 300m uphill stretch, taking 15-20 minutes, with steps and railings for support along the way.
Koorumala is about 3 km from Elanji, 10 km from Piravom, and 45 km from Ernakulam city, with the nearest railway station at Piravom Road 6.7 km away. The access road is narrow and rough and suited to a careful driver on both two- and four-wheelers; it tapers into a walking path partway up, after which it's a 300m climb on foot to the viewpoint.
