Why Visit
Paniyeli Poru sits on the River Periyar between Malayattoor and Paneli, run by the Kerala State Forest Department. You park at the entrance and set off on a shaded, forested path of about 1.5 to 2 km to reach the main rapids - the walk itself is part of the experience, with tree cover most of the way. The spot gets its name from the raftsmen who once fought the river's wild currents here, and standing at the rapids gives a sense of why. Along the trail there's a treehouse viewpoint for a wider look at the river, plus basic changing rooms and separate restrooms for men and women near the rapids area. Water levels and mood change with the season - October and November bring fuller rivers and waterfalls after the monsoon, though occasional northeast-monsoon showers can interrupt a visit. December to March is the calmest, most reliable stretch to walk the trail and spend time by the water. Carry as little plastic as possible - any plastic water bottle needs a ₹10 refundable deposit at entry. Since it's forest department land, expect a managed, ticketed experience (₹60 for adults) rather than an open free-for-all riverside, with hours running 8 AM to 4 PM. Plan for a half or full day given the walk in, time by the rapids, and walk back out.
